The Horse Protection Society welcomes anyone that wants to volunteer regardless
of whether they have experience with horses or not. No one is too old or too young. All one needs is a love for
animals.
There are many ways to get involved from writing thank you notes and taking phone
messages, to helping with the newsletter, cleaning stalls, and repairing fences.
Once a month,
usually on a Saturday, we have Project Day at the ranch. Members and volunteers come to the sanctuary and help
with different projects such as cleaning stalls, repairing doors or roofs, demolishing old buildings, raking leaves, clearing
brush, stacking hay, etc. We may also have the equine dentist or farrier there at this time. On these days we
share fellowship over a potluck dinner and have an informal meeting about happenings at the sanctuary. Members are notified
of Project Day by email or our newsletter Over Herd.
One area where HPS most desperately
needs assistance is with help feeding the horses. We are always looking for volunteers that have the time to learn to
feed the horses and are able to commit to helping with this task. We normally have 40-50 horses that need to be fed
twice a day. Feeding the horses is a good way to learn about horse care because this is also when we do a daily inspection
of the horses for injuries, cuts, suspicious bumps, etc and administer medicine or medical treatment to the horses.
If you are handy with a hammer, are interested in helping with the newsletter, can offer administrative
assistance, can commit to helping to feed horses several times a month, or feel you can contribute in another way, we would
love to hear from you!
